Privacy Policy

AskWidget provides AI-powered chat assistants for business websites. This policy explains how we handle data when you interact with an AskWidget chatbot on any website.
What we collect
When you chat with an AskWidget chatbot on a business's website, we collect and store:
- The content of your chat messages and the assistant's responses (the transcript)
- Contact details you choose to share (name, phone, email) when requesting a follow-up
- Which website the chat occurred on and the date and time of the chat
- Message counts (for the business's billing) and your IP address (for rate limiting and abuse prevention)
How chat transcripts are used and stored
Chat transcripts are stored on our servers and are visible to the business whose website you chatted on, in their AskWidget dashboard. Businesses use them to review conversations, follow up with visitors, and improve their assistant's answers. Transcripts may also be sent to the business by email as part of conversation summaries. Transcripts are retained while the business's account remains active; businesses can request deletion of their data, and you can ask the business (or us at [email protected]) to delete a conversation you were part of.
Contact information you share
If you provide your name, phone number, or email during a chat, that information is saved as a lead for the business and emailed to the business owner so they can follow up with you. Sharing it is always optional and always initiated by you.
Health information
AskWidget is not HIPAA compliant and is not intended to collect health information. Please do not share medical or health details in a chat. Businesses subject to HIPAA may not use AskWidget, and chatbots on the platform are prohibited from requesting health information from visitors, as described in our Terms of Service.
How messages are processed
Your messages are sent to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude AI to generate a response. Anthropic processes these messages under their API terms, which state that API inputs and outputs are not used to train their models.
Cookies and local storage
The chat widget uses your browser's session storage to keep a session identifier so the conversation can continue across messages; it ends when you close the tab. The widget does not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking. Business owners signing into the dashboard use authentication cookies provided by Clerk, our sign-in provider.
Data shared with third parties
We rely on a small set of service providers: Anthropic (Claude API) to generate responses, Stripe to process business subscription payments (we never see or store card numbers), Clerk for business-owner sign-in, and an email delivery provider to send lead alerts and summaries to business owners. Beyond these, we do not sell, share, or transfer your data to third parties, and we do not use advertising networks or analytics trackers.
For business owners
If you are a business using AskWidget, we store your business configuration (services, hours, pricing, etc.), your customers' chat transcripts and leads, and your usage counts on our servers to power your chatbot and dashboard. Payment details are handled entirely by Stripe. We do not share your business information or your customers' data with other clients or third parties.
Security
All communication between your browser, our servers, and the AI is encrypted via HTTPS. We follow standard security practices to protect our infrastructure.
Children
AskWidget is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
